Designer Profile: Charlotte Moss

On her website, Charlotte Moss's tag-line is "A Flair For Living", a line that she also uses as the title for her blog on food and gardening. On the "C'est Inspire" section of her website, Moss posts photos of things that inspire her, which includes everything from leaves, to sculptures, to the furniture in Monticello. Clearly, Charlotte Moss takes inspiration from many angles, but perhaps the place from which she took the most inspiration is her grandmother, who passed down "the hospitality gene", serving "homespun Sunday lunches" every week in Virginia.

Charlotte Moss's designs are "a graceful convergence of elegance and livability", and reflect her southern upbringing. It's a feeling that's high-class and luxurious, yet- because of that southern hospitality that Moss was raised with- welcoming as well: her rooms look like a place where you'd want to sit down and stay awhile. The colors she uses- such as soft pinks and mauves, leafy greens, and sky blue- are often floral, and evoke the feeling of being in a garden, which is further enhanced by her frequent use of floral prints and actual plants. But no room is complete without the little knick-knacks and accessories that give it personality, be it a patterned accent pillow, a silver tray, or an elegant picture frame.

In addition to interior designs, Charlotte Moss has also designed "fabric, carpets, furniture, china, and linens" and written seven books, the most recent being Charlotte Moss Decorates. Moss has also been a contributor for Wall Street Journal and Architectural Digest, and is a frequent public speaker. One thing that is very important to Charlotte Moss is community service and philanthropic works, and she has been involved with a variety of charities, including (but not limited to) The Thomas Jefferson Foundation-Monticello, The New York School of Interior Design, and the Bone Marrow Foundation. She has also been the recipient of many awards, such as Elle Décor's Vision Award in 2009 (shewas also included in their "A-List" designers group) and the Royal Oak Foundation's Timeless Design Award in 2010 "in recognition of her work in design, historical preservation and philanthropy."
